A Shah is Impressed

In 1867 a gas holder was built hereby the Imperial Gas Light & Coke Company with a capacity of 2,500,000 cubic feet which was some ten times the size of many considered large. In 1873 the Shah of Persia visited this industrial complex and was very impressed. According to the local historian Barbara Denny:

'...he concluded that its designer, named Murdoch, must have been a reincarnation of Merdoch, the Assyrian god of light, and accordingly ordered him to be canonised.'

As a result the structure was called 'The Sultan'.
