1851 (19/12) - Death of J.M.W. Turner

Here at the junction of Cremorne Road and Cheyne Walk is a small house that was once 6 Davis Place and at 10:00 a.m. on 19th December 1851 there died here an old man. He was known locally as Mr Booth and more widely as Joseph Mallord William Turner then 86 years old and the oldest member of the Royal Academy, Burlington Place. He was attended by Mrs Sophia Booth who had taken a twenty-one year lease on the house in 1846. She was the landlady in Margate with whom he had been in the habit of lodging during his regular visits to that town since the 1820's. He was also attended by Mr W. Bartlett 'surgeon Dentist and Cupper' of Park Walk, Chelsea, who only knew of Mr Booth, for whom he had provided false teeth. Reportedly, although it was a foggy morning the winter sun had briefly shone through directly onto Turner's face and according to Bartlett 'He died without a groan.'
