Sandford Manor House

Parts of the structure are Elizabethan. In the early 18th century this may have been the residence of Joseph Addison (essayist, classical scholar and politician 1672-1719), who certainly lived in Sands End. It ceased to be a private residential property in 1762 when it became a saltpetre factory. It survived that usage to become, briefly, a pottery in 1790 and then the site of a variety of businesses. Senior employees of the Imperial Gas Company were accommodated here when the company bought the manor house and surrounding land in 1824. Following the cessation of gas manufacture by the company the house and land were sold to a development company in 1971/2. After 15 years of negotiation, the company in association with the local authority and English Heritage built low rent housing on the land and carefully restored the house whilst adapting it for use as offices.
