The church here was consecrated on 18/10/1824. Sidney Street was then called Robert Street. The architect was James Savage who adopted a perpendicular style with flying buttresses and high-pitched nave. The tower is 142 feet high. The first rector was the Rev. Gerald Valerian Wellesley, a brother of the Duke of Wellington.
