Rowton House
Here, in Bond Way, Vauxhall, is the first of the six hostels founded by Montagu William Lowry-Corry, 1st Baron Rowton, which was built to the designs of Harry B. Measures in 1892. Rowton was a lawyer who was (in 1866-8 and 1874-80) private secretary to Benjamin Disraeli (1804-81). The Rowton hostels were to provide cheap accommodation for the migrant workers that poured into London in the second half of the 19th century. Some 6,000 could be accommodated and although this was a philanthropic endeavour the hostels did make a profit.
