Voltaire - Visitor
Voltaire was the guest for some three weeks in 1727 of Lord Charles Mordaunt, 3rd Earl of Peterborough, who was resident here in the then Peterborough House The Earl entertained many of the day's great writers including Addison (who lived locally), Swift and Pope. Swift wrote:
Mordaunt fills the trump of fame,
The Christian world his deeds proclaim
And prints are crowded with his name.
He was also a great traveller and said to have 'seen more kings, princes and postillions than any other living man.'
