The Lillie Bridge Athletic Grounds
Lillie Road bridged what had been a tidal inlet known as Counters Creek from the present Chelsea Creek. The inlet became the line followed by the railway which once serviced the marshalling yards that are now the exclusive development of Chelsea Village and from which a branch, still in use, crosses the river. The Athletic Grounds were opened in 1869. An event of 1875 promised:
'Great Feats of Strength and Foot Racing. Catch-hold Wrestling, Rope Pulling in Gangs, a One Mile Flat race. Putting a 16 pound weight and racing a wheel barrow carrying 2 cwt for 50 yards.'
