The Line of a Railway

Early in the 19th century, William Edwards, 3rd Earl of Kensington, attempted to increase the value of his estates by the construction of a 2-mile long canal from the Thames to a dock which was to be sited where Pembroke Road, W8, now is. This caused several of the fields to be acquired by the consortium which was to carry out this plan and when it folded they sold to the West London Railway Company who built the rail link across the river to Clapham Junction.
