Memorials for a really old soldier

Here in the Great Hall of the Royal Hospital is a portrait of William Hiseland by George Alsop made in 1730. When William was admitted to the hospital he 'had served the crown upwards of eighty years, and signalised himself in a gallant manner at Edgehill Fight [1642] against the Parliament army; was also in the wars in Ireland under King William; and likewise served his Grace the Duke of Marlborough through all his Campaigns in Flanders [about 1702-1711].' Married when one hundred years old he spent twelve years visiting his wife outside the hospital and his tombstone says that when he did then die 'His Complexion was fresh and florid, his Health hale and hearty, his Memory intact and ready. In Stature he exceeded the Military size. In Strength he surpassed the prime of Youth.'
