Ranelagh House
The site of the local authority estate of Ranelagh Gardens was once a part of 55 acres acquired, between 1764 and 1775, by Philip Stephens on which he built what became Ranelagh House when his heiress married the 6th Viscount Ranelagh. The Viscount was violent in the pursuit of what he deemed his rights. The house became the Ranelagh Club when owned by Reginald Herbert but that club moved across the river to Barn Elms when the ground lease expired in 1884.
