Willow Bank
Sir Francis Gosling was the owner of a house here in the mid-18th century with three acres of terraced gardens along the river from just west of the north bank foot of the Putney rail bridge. The later house, named Willow Bank was in fact bought and demolished by the Metropolitan District Railway Company in 1889. Between times its several residents included: one of George III's physicians, a President of the Royal College of Physicians; two gentlemen who managed to provide great parties for some time but disappeared when it became known they could not pay; and, latterly, a Frederick Swindell, once a 'boots' in a Nottingham hotel who had advanced more than somewhat from that, and was 'washed out of my own house!' The house was on piles but flooded more than once.
