A focus of Chelsea's 'Swinging' era
Mary Quant (1934-), in partnership with Alexandre Plunket-Green (who had been the proprietor of the first King's Road coffee bar) opened a boutique called Bazaar here in 1955 to sell her own designs. One of her designs was the mini-skirt, another was to feature the pubic hair shaved to the shape of a heart. The former was the trend setter for the boutique business. The latter had less commercial success. Thea Holme in her book 'Chelsea' notes that 'Boutiques and coffee bars began to open up wherever King's Road shopkeepers could be persuaded to move out.' There was a lot else that derived from this ferment.
