Hurlingham Park

The local authority acquired the land here for the sports facilities, athletics track, tennis courts, sports centre, etc., from the Hurlingham Club after the 1939-45 war. The land for the development of subsidised housing on the western boundary of the park was obtained at the same time. The earliest proposal by the local authority for the purchase and housing development of the Hurlingham Club grounds came from the Fulham Council elected in 1919 which included women for the first time. That attempt was blocked by the government which refused compulsory purchase powers.
