Chelsea F.C.
The club's ground, which lies in Fulham and not Chelsea, is named Stamford Bridge because it lies hard by that bridge over the inlet that used to extend from Chelsea Creek on the Thames. The grounds were those of the London Athletic Club (established in 1876) which were taken over by the Chelsea club when that was founded in 1908 by Joseph Mears (who built the wall to prevent the flooding of Bishops Park when the London bishopric handed that over to the local authority). The ground was not developed residentially in the 19th century building splurge because it was marshland subject to tidal flooding.
