Natural History Museum

The museum fronts onto Cromwell road between Exhibition Road and Queens Gate. The following is derived from a pamphlet dated September 1998. The main division of the Museum is into Life and Earth galleries. Amongst features of the Life Galleries is The Dinosaur Exhibition which presents answers to the questions: 'Why did they become extinct?'; 'Did catastrophe strike from outer space or from the earth's core?' Another is the presentation of information on the extraordinary lives of hundreds of animals including: the Tasmanian devil; elephants; lions; tigers and the blue whale. A third is the Ecology Exhibition explaining how plants turn the sun's energy into food. In the Earth Galleries, major items include the Visions of Earth exhibit where the visitor travels through a huge, revolving Earth sculpture where a new perspective may be gained on what our world is. That leads to the exhibit titled 'The Power Within' which guarantees an earth shattering experience whilst surviving a volcanic eruption and an earthquake. Then 'From the beginning' presents some answers on how the Earth was born and may die. This section also shows how changes in sea levels and global temperatures have affected the planet throughout its existence and how this dynamic history may be carried forward. Finally, the Earth Galleries also contain 'Earth's treasury' glittering with thousands of rock and mineral specimens from the Museum's world famous collections. The Museum's Library houses the country's third largest collection of art on paper.
