Hammertons Ferry, Ham

This ferry was started by Walter Hammerton early in the 1900's. He was a member of a family which had a long connection with boats on the river. His action followed the opening of Marble Hill Park to the public and the designation of the Surrey-side towpath as a public highway. His right to do so was challenged by William Champion and Lord Dysart who ran the Twickenham ferry. Hammerton won the case in the lower court, lost in the appeal court but persisted to win again in the Lords. The ferry still runs in 1999.
