Twickenham Ferry
This ferry was set up by the owner of Ham House (the 1st Earl of Dysart) in about 1640. The Dysart family still took an interest when a competing ferry was set up by Walter Hammerton in the early 1900's. This ferry was the subject of a 'river ditty' by Theo Margiol which was published in 1878. A verse runs:
'O hoi and O ho' you may call as you will
The moon is arising on Petersham Hill
And with love like a rose in the stern of the wherry
There's danger in crossing to Twickenham Town.
The ferry no longer runs.
