The ford between Kew and Brentford

There has been the possibility to ford the river some 200 yards upstream from the present Brentford Ferry gate entry to Kew gardens and this crossing has probably been in use from prehistoric times. Apart from the tidal range, the depth of the river has varied significantly from time to time. For example, the remains of a hut built on piles found in this area (dated to cAD200 to 300) suggests the river was neither tidal nor greatly variable at that time in this stretch. This is considered the most likely point for the crossing by Julius Caesar in his campaign of 54BC.
