Chiswick Bridge

Authorised by parliament, as was Twickenham bridge, in the Act for the Great Chertsey Road scheme passed in 1928 work began September 1930 and it was opened, as was Twickenham bridge, by the then Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII and then the Duke of Windsor). A feature of the construction was the procedure followed to put and hold in place the girders forming the central 150 ft arch. This involved opening and holding open the arch, for 35 minutes, while placing the girders and filling the joints with concrete. To do this the engineers employed 10 hydraulic jacks each with a 250 ton capacity.

The bridge joins Clifford Avenue, Mortlake with Great Chertsey Road, Grove Park.
