The present Kew Bridge
Opened on 20/05/1903 by Edward VII this was built by Sir John Wolfe Barry who was also the builder of Tower Bridge. It replaced the previous bridge built here by James Paine (opened 1789). It had been intended to refurbish Paine's bridge but Barry found that the arches of Paine's structure, rather than being piled, were founded on timber rafts which were rotting. The bridge is officially named the Edward Bridge, after the king, although it has never been known as such,,
The bridge joins Kew Bridge Road, Gunnersbury and Kew Road, Kew.
