Barnes Railway Bridge
The initial structure was built by Joseph Locke and Thomas Brassey in 1869 but the present widened and strengthened structure was opened in 1895. To effect this widening and strengthening, the main girders were floated into position on barges and lowered onto the piers by the fall of the tide. Thomas Brassey was also involved with the Richmond and Kew rail bridges. The footbridge which is a famed grandstand for the Oxford and Cambridge boatrace is cantilevered from the downstream side of the bridge.
