Along with Old Friars this house contains, at basement level, fragments of the Franciscan Friary attached to Henry VII's palace. The Friary fell to Henry VIII's reformation and the palace to the officers of Cromwell's Commonwealth.

This is considered to be one of the most important groups of buildings in Richmond. It was a speculative development built at this time for Vertue Radford by William Wellings who was a local carpenter.
