1549 Kew fishermen's protest

The Kew fishermen petitioned the Court of Aldermen of the City of London for the removal of a fishing weir set up by the Duke of Somerset. Whilst recommended to make a suit to the Duke they were told that 'in case they were not holpen thereby that they shulde repayer hither agin for further aid' and that his Grace would be reminded of the statutes against this sort of encroachment. The City of London was very posessive of its rights to the river. It may have been that the fishermen were encouraged in their petition by John Dudley (later Duke of Northumberland) who was trying to undermine and succeed Somerset as Protector to Edward VI.
