Squiggle

54 BC - Roman crossing point, Brentford

The remains of a considerable number of sharpened oak stakes have been found in the river bed during dredging. These are thought to have been a part of defences by British tribes, under Cassivellaunus, who were trying to stop Caesar's advance across the river. Caesar's description of the campaign in the 'Gallic Wars' supports this. The other most likely crossing point is at Coway Sale by Walton on Thames.
