Gay, John - Residence

Douglas House, Ham was at some time one of the homes of the Duke and Duchess of Queensbury who were very supportive patrons of John Gay who was often their guest. John Gay (1685-1732) who had his greatest success with The Beggar's Opera produced in 1728 from which he made a lot of money as he had done before from the publication of his poetry. The earlier fortune he lost with the South Sea bubble. The latter fortune he enhanced by a sequel to the Opera called Polly. Performance of Polly was banned but the book brought him £1200.
