George Eliot - Residence
George Eliot was the pen name of Mary Ann (sometimes Marian) Evans (1819-80). She and George Henry Lewes, with whom she had formed a liaison in 1854, lived here at 8 Parkshot. The accommodation was somewhat cramped and they moved in 1859 to what is now Wimbledon Park Road which was not cramped but turned out not to be very congenial either. Eliot is rated by some as one of the greatest of English novelists with 'Middlemarch' as her finest achievement.
