Pissarro, Camille - Residence

The impressionist artist Camille Pissarro (1830 - 1903) came to Kew in 1892 and lived at the corner of Kew Green and Gloucester Road. He came to support his son Lucien, who was living in England before his father's arrival, and was in love with a Jewish girl. Her parents were set against their marriage. Reluctantly, they did allow the marriage to proceed after discussions with Camille. There is a painting by him of the view from his balcony of the Mortlake / Kew Road junction peopled by a bank holiday crowd.

Of the Royal Botanic Gardens he wrote: "What trees! What lawns! What pretty, imperceptible undulations of the land! It is a dream."
