Hogarth, William - Residence
Hogarth's 'country cottage'. William Hogarth (1697 - 1764) lived here from 1749 until the night before his death with his wife Jane, sister Anne and widowed mother-in-law Dame Judith Thornhill. By his late thirties the artist had assured himself of a regular income though his several series of topical prints such as 'The Harlots Progress' and 'The Rakes Progress'. That income was protected by the Engravers' Copyright Act of 1735 for which he was considerably responsible. This house initially provided him with a country retreat but as he fell out with many, particularly of the town establishment, he spent more and more of his time here.
