Pembroke, Countess of - Residence

The Countess of Pembroke in 1795 was responsible for the conversion of what had been a mole-catcher's cottage to what became Pembroke Lodge here in Richmond Park. The Lodge was later a home of the Russell family of which Lord John Russell (1792-1878) was prime minister from 1846- 1852 and again in 1865. His grandson the philosopher, mathematician and activist Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) lived here as a lad with his grandmother.
