Devon, Earls of - Residence

Following the establishment of Richmond Palace as his favoured residence by Henry VII, Henry Courtney, Earl of Devon (succeeded by his son Edward) who was a close relative to the king settled in this area on the riverside upstream of the ferry. Edward was thought to be a possible husband for Queen Mary who had spent much of her youth in Kew as he did.
