Star and Garter Home, Richmond

Once considered to be amongst the finest hotels in Europe in its prime position atop Richmond Hill, the Star and Garter Hotel was vacant in 1915. The premises were bought with funds raised by public subscription and presented to Queen Mary as a home for disabled servicemen. After the 1914-18 war it was decided that a new, purpose built hospital was required. The new premises were designed, for free, by Sir Edwin Cooper and opened by George V and Queen Mary in 07/1924 as the Royal Star and Garter Home for Disabled Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen.
