Sir Thomas Ingrams, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, founded six almshouse in Mill Platt which were built in 1664. He and his wife endowed these in their wills of 1671 and 1676. They were substantially renovated in 1816 and have been maintained since. The almswomen, in 1822, each received £10 p.a., coats and gowns.
