The Butts, Brentford

A square of beautiful houses dating from the 1690's onwards. Although probably named for archery, the square is more renowned as the rowdy hustings of Middlesex elections. When John Wilkes stood here in 1769 a man was killed in the riots. The fact that he received the greater number of votes in more than one election was not accepted by the parliament of the time as a good enough reason for his becoming a member. His persistence and persistent success in gaining the majority of votes forced a change in this view. An accepted candidate was Sir William Proctor. His election expenses in 12/1768 included £1,090 for food and drink to his supporters and in compensation for the damage they did.
