Boston House

Also known as St Veronica's Retreat and Nazareth House, Boston House dominates the 17th century Chiswick Square. A plaque presently on the wall now records 'Into this garden Thackeray in 'Vanity Fair' describes Becky Sharp as throwing the dictionary'. Thackeray was a youthful scholar nearby at Walpole House. Boston House was probably built by Henry, Baron Alford, Viscount of Boston and Earl of Grantham (1675-1754). Henry was described when 30 years old by a Bishop Burnet as being 'a very pretty gentleman, fair complexioned,' to which Dean Swift added 'and good for nothing.' His father, Henry de Nassau, Count and Lord of Auverqueque and Master of the Horse to William III was rather more significant. He supported William in the conflict with James at the battle of the Boyne and was responsible for taking Dublin.
