Bedford House, Chiswick

Bedford House is one part, the other being Eynham House, of the mansion that was built or resulted from the remodelling of an earlier structure by Edward Russell between 1640 and 1650. Edward inherited property here from his father Francis Russell the 4th Earl of Bedford. It was sold on Edward's death to defray his debts incurred in the development of Newhaven harbour to a Thomas Plukenett. The house has a water-cistern dated 1678 and bearing the initials T., G. and P. for Thomas and his wife Grace. Bedford and Eynham Houses, Woodroffe House and the later Said and Lingard Houses, plus 'Thames View' and the western end of Chiswick Eyot were all the Woodroffe estate until 1920. Woodroffe was the name of the family into which Thomas Plukenett's daughter married.
