Walpole House, Chiswick

Toward the eastern end of Chiswick Mall parts of this date from some time before the last quarter of the 17th century but the main structure is claimed by the local historian Warwick Draper as being 'one of the finest specimens of Restoration and Queen Anne domestic architecture in the greater London area'. It was supposedly once occupied by King Charles' mistress Barbara Villiers and later quite certainly by a School for young Gentlemen where a sad young Thackeray was enclosed for a time. A little later it was a happy home from 1904-1910 for the actor Beerbohm Tree and his family.
