St Mary's Church, Twickenham

The tower is 14th century but the nave was rebuilt in 1714. The Vestry minutes of 25/04/1713 record 'The parish church of Twickenham falling down on Thursday night the 9th April 1713.' The new building to the tower was designed by John James of Greenwich who had done other work in Twickenham houses. A particularly active proponent of the rebuilding was the artist Sir Peter Lely. The building work was done by local craftsmen. Several had to go to court to get paid by the committee who were not receiving the donations promised. The last of the cash required was only gathered in 1727 by a house to house collection.
