The Palm House, Kew Gardens
This is built on part of the lake that once divided the grounds of the White House which became the first Kew Palace. In 1812 the lake was partially filled in to leave the pool that is now in front of the Palm House. The building of the house was one of the early developments by Sir William Hooker who was the first government appointed Director of Kew Gardens. He chose Decimus Burton to design this building assisted by the engineer William Turner. The house was opened in 1848.
