St Mary's church, Barnes
There is a record of this church 's estate and tithes being given to a foundation associated with St Pauls during the reign of Richard Coeur de Lion (1157-1199). The earliest incumbent was Richard de St Alban's from about 1250. Of the present structure there may be elements of the tower dating to the late 15th century. The main structure of the church was altered and added to considerably in the 18th and 19th centuries. As an indication that disrespect for church property is not novel to our day and age, Anderson's History of Barnes quotes records from the reign of Edward VI (1547-1543) including:
Ther was stolen out of the said Churche by night one cope of blewe baudkin, a vestment of grene velvet, an Alter cloth of sarsenet and aulter clothes, vj. table clothes of lynnen, ij. candlesticks of latten gilt. All of whiche wer stolen in anno quarto regni regis praedict.. Also there was stolen out of the said Churche by night in anno quarto regni regis praedict: Item a cope of white baudkin a bible another boke and ij. aulter clothes but by whom we know not.
