Hogarth House
The house dates from about 1700. It is of interest as the residence of the artist William Hogarth (1697-1764) and for the collection of copies of prints and Hogarth memorabilia that it now contains rather than as a building or estate. The artist lived here with more and more frequency from 1749 until the night before his death. The stable which, with its loft, is supposed to have been the artist's main workshop collapsed about 1868. The house had deteriorated to almost total decay by 1900 when a private benefactor, Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Shipway, V.C., bought and restored it to be opened to the public in 1902. Then in 1909 he gifted it, in trust, to the local authority as a museum. It was again damaged by bombs in 1940.
