Bridgettine Foundation, Syon House, Brentford

A monastery in the order of St Saviour and St Bridget was founded 1415 by Henry V and set up in Twickenham Park. They moved here to Syon, in Brentford, in 1431 where they lasted until the suppression of monasteries by Henry V caused them to move to Europe in 1534. Except for a brief return to England during Mary Tudor's reign, the foundation remained in various parts of Europe (initially the Low Countries and then Portugal) until their return to the UK in 1831 when they set up in Devon.
