William III - Visitor

William was an occasional visitor to the home here of his servant Sir Stephen Fox whom he retained in the post of Lord Commissioner of the Treasury although he had originally been appointed by James II. Fox had the reputation that 'none knew better how to husband the public money or was more free than him from corrupt practices.' William is supposed on his first visit to have been so taken with the Manor Farm House that he exclaimed 'This place is perfectly fine; I could live here five days!' (He did live rather longer in Wren's adaptations of Hampton Court.)
