Addington, Henry - Richmond Park deputy ranger

The 1st Viscount Sidmouth (1757-1844), briefly prime minister (1801-4) with an ineffective administration, was also the home secretary responsible for the suppression of the Luddite rioters and in office during the Peterloo massacre in Manchester. It was when he was a deputy ranger of Richmond Park that he planned Sidmouth Wood which remains here in the park. The wood has through it a clear avenue allowing St Paul's to be viewed from the King's Standing in the gardens of Pembroke Lodge.
