The Barn Elms duels

Several duels are believed to have been fought here on the Barn Elms estate. One involved a brother of the Duke of Norfolk, in dispute with a Captain William Jenkins, another between a Colonel Talbot and a Sir Robert Holmes. Probably the most prestigious event was on 17/01/1667 when George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham (1627-87) killed the Earl of Shrewsbury (d.o.b. not researched) whilst, allegedly, the page holding Shrewsbury's horse was his Countess and Buckingham's paramour.
