Clark, William Tierney - Engineer

Clark (23/08/1783 - 22/09/1852) sometime a mechanic at the Coalbrookdale Ironworks of Abraham Darby was appointed engineer to the West Middlesex Water Co at Hammesmith where he carried out major works. He persuaded the shareholders of the Hammersmith Bridge Co that the bridge should be a suspension although at the time only the one had been built in the UK. The elegance of his design helped set the fashion for the building of the several other suspension bridges down stream. There were also the advantages derived from the suspension bridge form which allows a greater span than arches with fewer piers to obstruct navigation.
