Gunnersbury Park

As a substantial element of the Manor of Gunnersbury this has a long, lively history. The name may derive from an association with the sister of King Canute (Knut Sveinson who was king of England from 1016-35). The present park's features, particularly the cedars, owe a lot to the landscaping by the architect William Kent (1684-1748) and plantings by Princess Amelia (resident here from 1761-86). The park includes a temple where Princess Amelia took tea with her guests and the two houses which replaced her home early in the 19th century and were later owned by the Rothschilds. The London Boroughs of Ealing and Hounslow now maintain the grounds and a museum in the larger of the mansions.
