Disused reservoirs, Barnes

At one time there were reservoirs here which were constructed by the West Middlesex Water Works Company (which employed the engineer who designed the original Hammersmith Bridge). The water, after treatment, was pumped under the river and up to reservoirs on Primrose Hill. For some reason this area was until 1900 a detached portion of the Parish of Putney, i.e., not of Barnes. The site has been drained and refilled and is now occupied by two schools - St Paul's and the Swedish School. St Paul's is one of the old London 'Public' schools which was previously sited in constrained surroundings in Hammersmith.
